Five years ago, I wrote this post (now revised) in a season of quiet ache. I was serving, loving, giving in faith and service; but wondering if anyone saw.
In a world that often praises hustle over heart, Martha’s story in Luke 10 feels strikingly familiar. She wasn’t just busy with housework; she was longing to be noticed, valued, and loved during her service.
While her sister Mary sat at Jesus’ feet, Martha carried the weight of responsibility, perhaps wondering if anyone saw her sacrifice.
This passage isn’t a rebuke of productivity; it’s an invitation to presence.
For modern women, especially moms and homemakers, Martha’s moment with Jesus reminds us that our worth isn’t measured by our to-do lists. It’s found in being known by the One who sees beyond the tasks to the tender heart behind them. This remains something that I am working on.
And today, I revisit Martha’s story with fresh eyes…
Here is what one Biblical Scholar wrote about it:
Helen Frankenthaler, “The List” |
“I don’t believe Martha simply chose cooking or housework over the Lord.
-Nancy Lee DeMoss Wolgemuth
from Revive Our Hearts

Was Martha really just busy… or was she aching to be seen? (in Faith and Service)
I’ve carried this question with me for years. Nancy DeMoss’s words stirred something deep:
“It isn’t that she wanted to be working. It’s that she thought she had to.”
-Nancy Lee Demoss Wolgemuth
Martha wasn’t choosing chores over Christ; she was longing for His gaze, His affirmation.
And haven’t we all been there? Doing, striving, hoping someone notices.
“She wasn’t choosing housework over Jesus… she was longing to be seen by Him.”

Personal Reflection: When I Felt Like Martha
I still remember one August evening at Vacation Bible School, in the baby room.
The air was thick with heat and humidity, and I was caring for four babies, alone.
My helper had called in sick, and there was no one else available. For five nights in a row, I showed up, exhausted but committed.
That night, as the other ladies bustled about their duties, I sat in that tiny room for two full hours, rocking, feeding, soothing; all while feeling invisible.
No one peeked in.
No one asked how I was holding up. I wasn’t angry, but I was weary. I wanted someone to notice, not just the work, but the heart behind it.
In that moment, I felt just like Martha.
Not because I was too busy to sit at Jesus’ feet, but because I longed to be seen by Him. I wasn’t choosing housework over worship; I was choosing service, hoping it mattered. Hoping He saw me.

This reflection invites us to pause and remember that our worth isn’t measured by what we do but by who we are in God’s eyes. He sees the hands that labor, the hearts that ache, and the faith that perseveres
Whether in your home, your church, or your community, can you recall a moment when you longed for someone to notice the heart behind your effort?
“Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.”
~ Luke 12:7
