My Grandma May and Her Chocolate Crumble Cookie Recipe

Thanksgiving is a time for family, gratitude, and delicious treats.

One of my most-cherished memories is baking Chocolate Crumble cookies beside my great-grandmother, “Grandma May” in her vintage kitchen.

My Grandmother had red hair too. This is me in 1982with her in the kitchen making the

Baking these cookies using Maw Maw’s (that’s what I called her) old mixer and real butter – baked on ancient baking sheets – such a time filled with love and warmth.

Everyone in Our Family Loves to Bake These Chocolate Treats

I’ll cherish that time forever. I think that is why the tray of cookies presented on Thanksgiving Day is so special. Maw Maw passed so many years ago, but her memories and love linger in her recipes.

What Makes Chocolate Crumble Baked Treats So Good?

With their rich chocolate flavor and crumbly texture, the Chocolate Crumble Baked Treats have become a beloved tradition in our family.

In this post, I’ll share the recipe and the heartwarming story behind it.

The Scene in My Own Mother’s Kitchen last November

I loved everything about visiting Maw Maw’s little home in November. One year, I was permitted (after much planning and begging) to go over to West Virginia with my aunt to stay the Sunday before Thanksgiving until my family arrived for Thanksgiving Day. It was a time of preparation, fall house cleaning, shopping, and baking in the old-fashioned ways.

A Vintage Kitchen with Old-Fashioned Tools

It is one of the highlights of my childhood. I was 11 years old at the time. Her kitchen was always warm, not just from the heat of the oven, but from the love that she constantly showered on me.

My Great-grandma’s Oven was Very Old and Got Very Hot

Maw Maw had a way of making me feel special, of making me feel like I was the “most important person in the world.” Her gentle guidance and patient teaching made baking cookies a joyful experience, one that I looked forward to when I went home to bake in my mother’s kitchen during the Holidays every year.

Baking pies and cookies with my great-grandmother was something we did many times a week. Every morning during my November visit, we would gather in her cozy kitchen, the air filled with the sweet aroma of vanilla and cinnamon.

Her old mixer, a relic from a bygone era, would whir to life as we creamed real butter and sugar together. The sound of the mixer was like a comforting hum, a prelude to the delicious treats we were about to create.

This is an image of what I remember my Grandmother's Mixer may have looked like.
I don’t have a photo of my Maw Maw’s Mixer, but it kind of looked like this image

Great-grandma’s ancient baking sheets, worn from years of use, were a testament to the countless batches of cookies that had been baked on them. Each sheet had its own story, its own history, and I felt a sense of connection to the past every time we used them.

Memories in My Mind’s Eye of Dinner at Maw Maw’s House

Sometimes, as we rolled out the dough and cut out festive shapes, she would share stories of her own childhood, of Holidays long ago, and of the traditions that had been passed down through generations.

As we decorated the cookies with colorful icing and sprinkles, she would remind me that the most important ingredient was love. It was a lesson that has stayed with me throughout my life.

Those moments in the West Virginia kitchen, surrounded by the sights, sounds, and smells of Thanksgiving, are memories that I will always treasure. Baking cookies with my great-grandma was more than just a holiday tradition; it was a time of bonding, of learning, and of love.
