I love stepping off my back porch to go out and enjoy trimming herbs and picking vegetables. Snipping blooms for the centerpiece of our dinner table is a joy.

From Garden to Gathering: Tips for Getting Ready for Fall Harvest

Have you been dreaming of fresh tomatoes on the vine? Do you want crisp cucumbers or armfuls of zinnias? Now is the time to act.

Because whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, now is the perfect time to start planning.

Here’s why:

1. Homegrown Goodness Just Hits Different

When you grow your own food, you know exactly what goes into it. There are no chemicals you didn’t choose. There’s no long transport from farm to table. It’s just real, nourishing food grown with your hands and heart. A simple backyard harvest can be the beginning of slower living, healthier eating, and deeper gratitude.

2. Gardening is Good for the Soul

Planting a garden in your backyard isn’t just about food! It’s about slowing down. It’s about morning sunlight, dirt under your fingernails, and seeing tiny miracles unfold every day.

Moms especially find that even a few minutes a day in the garden bring calm. It gives them purpose and a surprising amount of joy. I know it does for me.

There was a year I tore a ligament in my knee. I tried so hard to get the garden in, but to no avail. I could not water in the mornings, could not weed, and so my vegetables withered and died. And so did a part of my soul.

3. You Can Start Small (Even Just One Raised Bed)

You don’t need a huge yard or fancy tools. Perhaps you only need a few pots on the patio. A small raised bed is also a good start. Even a corner patch in your backyard is enough to get started. With a little planning, you can grow herbs, salad greens, or even strawberries with success.

Tips to Start Planning Your Backyard Garden Now:

  • Make a list of what you’d love to grow (think: tomatoes, lettuce, basil, sunflowers!)
  • Choose a sunny spot in your yard and observe it over the next few months
  • Start a garden journal or Pinterest board with layout ideas and planting dates
  • Set a goal: one raised bed? Three planters? A full veggie patch?

Next Spring Starts Now

If you’re longing for simpler living, fresh flavors, or a peaceful daily rhythm, now is the time to start planning. Plant a garden in your backyard this coming spring, and watch how much it gives back.

You will love it, Season after season.
