Embrace Gratitude in May: Slow Down and Appreciate Life

May invites us into a gentler rhythm, where slowing down in spring to practice gratitude can feel more natural and life‑giving.

Seasons change. The spring flowers that arrive new every morning outside my window are delightful.

I Love to Slow Down and Practice Gratitude as May Unfolds

May arrives quietly, not rushing the way spring sometimes does. It invites us to notice small things again. The longer light in the evenings. Windows open just enough.

The feeling that life is stretching out instead of pressing in.

At Blue Willow Cottage, this month always feels like an invitation to slow down and pay attention. Not in a dramatic way. Just gently.

I love to change the tone and colors of the decor in May

Gratitude in the Middle of Ordinary Days

One thing I love in spring is to note the seasonal changes in early May in my journal. I document the garden changes I have made, where I planted a cold-weather annual flower, what bulbs are coming up and where, and things I am grateful for.

Gratitude does not have to be written with perfect penmanship.

Some of my journal pages are much neater than others. I believe that is the beauty of my journal. If a grandchild thumbs through this book 25 years from now, I hope he/she will get the idea that some days were slower than others, but that their grandmother loved her life on busy and not so busy days, and loved writing about it in her special journal.

Sometimes my entries look like noticing the way the kitchen smells after dinner or pausing long enough to feel the breeze on my face while I hang out my wet laundry.

May reminds me that thankful living fits right into the middle of normal days. It lives in reheated coffee and quiet mornings before everyone wakes up. It shows up when we choose to name what is good, even when life feels full and loud.

Choosing Slower Moments on Purpose

Slowing down rarely happens by accident. It is a choice to sit on the porch instead of rushing inside. A choice to breathe before jumping into the next task. A choice to say this is enough for today.

This season teaches me that gratitude grows best when we stop long enough to notice it.

May does not ask us to change everything. It simply asks us to look around and see what is already here.

Practicing gratitude in May

As this month unfolds, I hope you find space to slow your steps just a little and let gratitude settle in right where you are. Here are a few ways I plan to let simple gratitude practices guide my days in May:

  • Letting mornings unfold without rushing the moment away
  • Noticing what is blooming right outside the window
  • Choosing presence over pressure in the middle of everyday tasks
  • Allowing slower rhythms to shape the days instead of fighting them
  • Giving thanks for the life I am living right now, not just the one I am working toward
